CUVDSP15A Research and Apply Techniques for Application to Spatial Design

"I try to create fantastic things, magical things, things like in a dream the world needs more fantasy."

Salvador Dali

Brief 2: Design an interior for a Surreal nightclub/ dayclub/ supperclub 50% of unit.
The club will operate the duration of the travelling Surrealist exhibition "Revolution by Night"

'Life' Magazine wrote that one funhouse at the 1939 World's Fair stood out among the others:

"Dali’'s Dream of Venus, the creation of famed Surrealist painter Salvador Dali’, is the most recent addition to the still-growing list of amusement-area girl shows and easily the most amazing. Weird building contains a dry tank and a wet tank. In the wet tank girls swim under water, milk a bandaged-up cow, tap typewriter keys which float like seaweed. Keyboard of piano is painted on the recumbent female figure made of rubber. In dry tank...a sleeping Venus reclines in 36-foot bed, covered with white and red satin, flowers, and leaves. Scattered about the bed are lobsters frying on beds of hot coals and bottles of champagne....All this is most amusing and interesting."

The building's modern, expressionistic exterior, with an entrance framed by a woman's legs, and shocking interior, including the bare-breasted "living liquid ladies" who occupied the tanks, caused quite a stir. The funhouse was so successful that it reopened for a second season, but once torn down it faded from memory and its outlandishness became the stuff of urban myth. Now, more than 60 years later, a collection of photographs of the Dream of Venus by Eric Schaal has been discovered. In stunning black-and-white and early Kodachrome, they show both the construction and the completion of the funhouse-from Dal’ painting a melting clock to showgirls parading for their audience. Salvador Dal’'s Dream of Venus reveals not only an eccentric work of architecture, but also a one-of-a-kind creation by one of the most fertile imaginations of the 20th century.

Research Document 500wds
With this project you are asked to produce a research document. The research document must be typed and bound in an A4 format and must be presented in a plastic sleeve book. Research documents will consist of the following.
1. An approprlate cover illustrating your completed spatial design, it's title and your name and class.
2. A title page this may have a reduced illustration, appropriate quote, statement of Intent etc and the title of your product.
3. A list of contents page which outlines the chapters in your document.
4. Chapters or sectlons as follows... The brief including your interpretation, initial thoughts on the project and a personal statement of intent. Your influences, 20 thumbnails, ideas & rough development including notated illustrations and photographs of your prototypes, demonstrate and discuss the design process. Discuss production process with special reference to materials, manufacture difficulties and how they were overcome. Illustrate with photos where appropriate. Costings, list materials, equipment and where appropriate labour costs. Self assessment: It is essential you discuss in detail - strengths and weaknesses in your research, design, and manufacturing process in reference to how you overcame or might have better resolved problems encountered during the project. Tell us what you learnt trom the project!
process:

Collect samples, photos, magazine cuttings, swatches for surface treatment to walls, floors, service bar, seating, logos, dancefloor
Arrange samples , photos, magazine cuttings, swatches into a balanced composition on an A2 piece of foamcore. Positioning with blutak initially until final positioning has been decided.
Use appropriate glues to adhere samples to the backing board. Heavier samples will require more robust adhesives to be used.
Provide a legend or key on the reverse of storyboard to avoid visual clutter
Label samples in the storyboard e.g "Viva" unglazed terracotta italian floor tile $95 sq /m handwritten or typeset available at...
Consider presenting a multi dimensional concept board with samples mounted at different heights.

Design and Construct a model of a dayclub/ nightclub:

Base size:approx A2 in floor area
Wall Height approx 3000mm min but if you have a mezzanine/ clerestory it will be up to 6000mm
Use scale 1 : 20
MATERIALS : include foamcore, pins and PVA for constuction of shell. Numerous materials can be laterally used to create interior elements e.g.fabric, contact paper, lino, tile, carpet offcuts, Balsa, airdried clay, fimo, paperclips, perspex scraps, various appropriate glues

Your design should include:
• a service bar
• seating placement and facsimile
• decore
• flooring including dancefloor
• wall surface treatments.
• signage.
lighting
doorways to amenties not part of design eg kitchen, rest rooms so it works practically
